For our 62nd episode of Fantasmo we're turning to a pair of 70's classics, featuring the original investigator of the unexplained Carl Kolchak! The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler featured the intrepid reporter (played brilliantly by the great Darren McGavin) squaring off against vampiric foes, much to the chagrin of his hard-nosed, disbelieving editor. The coolest thing about Kokchak is that he is just a regular guy after a story, and not some kind of superhero. As a result he experiences true fear, making it quite easy for the audience to identify with the character. The films spawned a television series that only lasted a season, but it left an impression on a legion of young viewers. Kolchak is credited as a source of inspiration for the X-Files, and a short-lived revival series came out in 2005 starring Stuart Townsend as Kolchak.
