Escapism Film Festival

The cool movie fests simply do not stop! The Carolina Theatre, home to our doppelganger program Retrofantasma, has an amazing film festival coming up the week after Monster Fest. This year it looks like they’re focusing largely on fantasy/sci-fi films, and the lineup looks well . . . fantastic! What is particularly interesting (and pretty scary) is that they are showing the last existing 35mm print of Flash Gordon, and the only existing 35mm print of Battlestar Galactica in the U.S. It is amazing to think that the theatrical exhibition of Flash Gordon comes down to a single copy . . . definitely underscores the importance of efforts to preserve film such as the National Film Registry. Most disturbing was that they couldn’t locate prints of movies like Superman II, Dragonslayer, Condorman, etc. If you have a chance, and especially if you’ve never seen Flash Gordon on the big screen, it’s probably worth that trip to N.C.!

Hard to believe that there is only ONE print of Flash and Battlestar! That amazes and saddens me at the same time. Well at least I got to see Flash on the big screen when it hit theaters back in the day! I remember my dad's words while leaving the theater...."THAT was the hokiest crap I have ever seen." HAAAAA! Yes it is hokey but what fun!

I got to see Flash as well, and saw Battlestar at the drive-in (which was awesome : ) Your dad was spot on in his assessment, but that silliness was definitely intentional . . . which is part of its lasting appeal.

It is unbelievable to think that there are only two prints of these floating around out there. I guess I always assume there were vaults where master copies were kept for modern films such as these, but guess not (except for maybe private collectors). Sad indeed.
